Apple has finally released a much-awaited software update for its recently launched iPhone 15 lineup, aimed at resolving known heating issues. Tagged as iOS 17.0.3, the software update is approximately 423.2MB in size and can be downloaded by visiting General>Software Update> And checking the same will prompt your iPhone to check for updates instead of waiting for the notification to arrive. While the update is primarily for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, it is also available for both the iPhone 15 and other recently launched iPhone models. The same improvements have also been implemented in iPadOS 17.0.3.
According to the changelog, the new iOS 17.0.3 update only lists two improvements. The first relates to kernel exploitation where an attacker with local access to the device can “actively exploit against versions of iOS prior to iOS 16.6”. The second solution is related to buffer overflows resulting in arbitrary code execution or the libvpx bug as it is now known.
The update also addresses an issue that was causing iPhone 15 Pro models to run hotter than expected. This update, along with the update for Instagram (version 302), which was known to be one of the apps that triggered the overheating issue for some users, will cause the iPhone of affected users to cool down. Other apps that were known to trigger overheating in the new iPhone 15 Pro models include Uber and Asphalt 9: Legends.
Apple claimed that overheating of its new iPhone 15 Pro models poses no risk to the user. It also initially attributed the overheating problem to some other factors such as high-power chargers, wireless charging, and background processes that occur after an iPhone is restored.
